THE ART BEHIND THE MUSIC AND LIFE BEYOND BELLY

Interviews by Gil Sembrano

Before photographic duo Chris and Tom Gorman had established their successful commercial and fine art photography studio in NYC, the brothers were musicians (Chris on drums and Tom on guitar and keyboards) in the influential guitar pop band Belly. From 1991 up until the band's untimely break-up in 1997, Belly, originally hailing from Newport, RI, was a fixture in the international music scene producing two critically-acclaimed albums, a best-of retrospective CD and a score of popular single releases such as the successful and ground-breaking 'Feed the Tree', 'Gepetto' and 'Now They'll Sleep'. With their debut album 'Star' that was certified Gold and subsequently garnering two Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Rock Album in 1993, Belly took the world by storm. They appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone, performed in massive arenas such as the UK's Glastonbury festival and played live on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the David Letterman show. Belly also toured abroad with other high-profile acts such as REM, Radiohead and the then newly re-formed Velvet Underground.

UCon Magazine is privileged to interview Chris and Tom Gorman who prove to be the ultimate creative multi-taskers as both visionary photographers and accomplished musicians with a unique musical legacy.
