Honorable Mention: Pascal | sculpture

4th Place Honorable Mention: United Creators First Annual Online Juried Arts Competition

Interview by Gil Sembrano

Santa Fe-based French sculptor, Pascal, works with wood that he manipulates and forms into sleek large-scale sculptures and installations. Often treated to resemble metals such as aged bronze, Pascal's abstract sculptures balance geometric abstraction with organic forms.

Describe your earliest beginnings as an artist.

My earliest memories of being an artist include feeling like a single drop of water in the immensity of the ocean. At that time, I was asking myself thousands of questions to which I had no answers. My experiences and ideas were conflicting. Parallel ideas consumed me.  I was a humble man, but one who believed he had something important enough to say that people should listen. At the same time, art filled me with a mix of fear and attraction. I also felt that I could discover the most about myself through the surprise I was able to create in my work.

What was a defining moment in your early development as an artist?

One day I understood that I was on the correct path because so many avenues opened up. This experience made me feel that I was heading in the right direction, that I was doing what I was supposed to do. That exact sense of encouragement is something that was quite forming. To this day I continue to strive for that feeling as often as possible.

Describe your driving force or motivation to create artwork.

Obsession. Finding the answer to my own questions has been a driving force. Also, much like a scientist, I am consumed with the research and development and the consequences thereof. What will happen if I mix this with this and this…? The result is never the same.
